McDonald’s Canada Announces Voluntary Freeze of Temporary Foreign Worker Program

TORONTO, ON (July 14, 2014) - McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited has been in close communication with Employment and Social Development Canada (the “Department”) regarding our use of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. As a direct result of those discussions we made our own decision to voluntarily freeze all Labour Market Opinions (LMOs) in our system on a temporary basis.

At the same time, we have committed to undertake an independent third party audit of all our corporate and franchised restaurants that employ temporary foreign workers. Of our more than 1,400 restaurants in Canada, only 268 restaurants employ temporary foreign workers. Of our more than 85,000 employees nationwide, temporary foreign workers account for approximately 4% of our workforce. Once that process is complete we will make informed decisions on next steps about our future participation in the Program.

It is important to clarify: McDonald’s and our franchisees use the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in markets where there are local labour challenges. We continue to support this Program and plan to continue our participation in it moving forward.

Finally, today’s action does not affect our current temporary foreign workers who have approved LMOs and work permits.
