    Updated Media Statement: Franchisee Allegations

TORONTO, ON (April 14, 2014) – McDonald’s Canada has been made aware of serious allegations concerning the employment of temporary foreign workers at two independent franchisee operations located in British Columbia and another in Alberta.
At McDonald’s Canada, we do not tolerate infractions of any kind – intended or unintended – against any employee. Our commitment to employees is to always do the right thing and with integrity. Our corporate and restaurant employees, as well as our independent franchisees, are committed to upholding this commitment each and every day.

We take these allegations very seriously and immediately launched our own investigations. In addition, we have launched a comprehensive review of all corporate and franchise-operated restaurants across the country to ensure our operations are fully aligned with the requirements of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and consistent with our McDonald’s Values.

We have more than 85,000 employees at McDonald’s franchised and corporate locations across Canada. Temporary foreign workers represent a very small proportion - only 4% - of our national workforce. We value the contributions of each and every one of our employees equally.

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program was created to help employers resolve staffing issues and it provides important support for businesses when used as intended. We will work closely with Service Canada on the audit of franchisees, and will ensure all recommendations are met. McDonald’s has a long-standing track record of compliance with Service Canada requirements.
