Update on Canadian Employment at McDonald’s Canada

TORONTO, ON (March 24, 2015) – In 2014, we became the subject of news stories about the use of the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program in some of our corporate and franchised restaurants. We responded by voluntarily freezing our use of the TFW program. We also engaged Deloitte, one of the world’s leading professional services firms, to complete a full TFW compliance review.

We have made the decision to no longer use the TFW program in our corporate restaurants. This decision does not include McDonald’s franchisees, who are independent business owners and have the autonomy to utilize this federal program if they need to do so.

Over the last year, the number of TFWs has decreased from 4 per cent to less than 2 per cent of McDonald’s employees in Canada.  We expect this number to further decrease over the coming year, helped in part by decreases in employment rates in certain regions.   Overall, we expect to see a reduction in TFWs at our corporate restaurants of approximately 88 per cent and a significant reduction at franchisee owned restaurants. The number of TFWs at corporate restaurants will be further reduced over time as individual TFW agreements expire.

We wish to express our ongoing appreciation to the men and women who contribute to our success – local employees and TFWs alike -- and remind them that they all remain an important part of the McDonald’s Canada family.

McDonald’s Canada and our independent franchisees are proud of our longstanding record as leading employers. Each year McDonald’s and our franchisees hire, on average, 45,000 people for part and full-time positions. All McDonald’s employees are offered great training, flexible schedules and the experience and opportunity they need to grow and succeed.

At McDonald’s, people are the foundation of our business and we value the contributions they make. Our People Promise details the employment standards we strive to uphold across our Canadian restaurant network every day.  McDonald’s Canada and our franchisees remain fully committed to building Canadian employment opportunities and offering careers that are meaningful, rewarding and protected by a commitment to provide a great work experience.
