    McDonald’s Canada Response to U.S. Wage and Benefits Announcement

    TORONTO, ON (April 1, 2015) – Earlier today, McDonald’s U.S. announced changes to its hourly wage and benefits programs for employees working in its corporate-owned restaurants.  These changes are specific to the United States and do not apply to McDonald’s Canada.
     
    In Canada, more than 85,000 people work at McDonald’s corporate and franchise-owned restaurants across the country.  Approximately 19,000 (or 22%) work in our corporate locations.   
     
    Employees working in McDonald’s company-owned restaurants in Canada receive wages and benefits that include :

    • Wages: Two-thirds of hourly employees, including 76% of part-time hourly employees, working in company-owned restaurants are paid above the provincial minimum wage.  All employees are also eligible for annual merit increases based on performance and tenure. 
    • Paid Time Off (Vacation): All full-time and part-time employees at company-owned restaurants are entitled to accrue vacation.  At a minimum, all part and full-time employees receive 4% or two weeks’ vacation annually, while full-time employees can receive up to five weeks based on their years of service.  All full-time salaried restaurant management   are eligible for additional weeks off in every fifth and 10th year of continuous employment.
    • Educational Assistance: All hourly employees attending post-secondary institutions are eligible to apply for two-year scholarships that are awarded annually.  All salaried restaurant management are eligible to receive an annual education subsidy for the cost of tuition and related expenses.
    • Health Benefits: All full-time employees are eligible to receive health and dental coverage.  Restaurant/General Managers also receive a health care spending account to claim for eligible health care expenses not covered by their selected health and dental benefits. 
    • Other:
      • All employees are able to participate in McDonald’s Platinum Program which provides them with discounts at a variety of national retailers. 
      • In addition, restaurant employees receive a 50 per cent discount at all participating McDonald’s restaurants across Canada.
      • Restaurant/General Managers are entitled to a company vehicle, including insurance and maintenance, after three years in the role.  More than one-third of our Restaurant Managers have company cars.
