Government Changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program

TORONTO, ON (June 20, 2014) - This past April, McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited made the decision to voluntarily freeze all Labour Market Opinions (LMOs) in our system on a temporary basis pending a comprehensive review.  In May, we engaged Deloitte, a global leading professional services firm, to lead an independent third-party compliance audit of our corporate and franchised restaurants’ use of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) which we expect to be completed shortly.

We have always been committed to hiring Canadians first.  Since 2011, we have hired more than 21,000 Canadians alone through our National Hiring Days – including more than 6,000 alone this past April. It is also important to note that of our more than 85,000 employees nationwide, temporary foreign workers represent less than 4% of our workforce. Our corporate and franchised restaurants utilize the TFWP, as a last resort, in markets where there are local labour challenges.

McDonald’s Canada and its franchisees value the contributions of each and every one of our employees. We have a long-standing track record of compliance with Service Canada requirements, and we are currently reviewing the full extent of the changes. We will work under the program’s new reforms; continuing to follow all regulations set out by the government.
